Our criteria for judging today’s selection of natural rock media is the same as part one. Common hazards in a house include physical trauma, spilt beverages or food, bacteria or mould growth, and harsh cleaning chemicals.

Today, we explore four new types of rock media.

Corian | Best Natural Stone for Interiors

We know, calling Corian natural is a bit of a stretch. Corian is a material invented by DuPont.

It is made of acrylic polymer, a synthetic binder, and alumina trihydrate, the rock part of the equation. Alumina trihydrate is extracted from bauxite ore, which is a sedimentary rock with a high aluminium content.

Corian is a man-made material, however, it is one of the more common countertops in Singapore. ©wickes

Physical Resistance: 3/10

Unfortunately, Corian is pretty lacking in its physical durability. It has a hardness of 2-3 on the Mohs scale of hardness, marginally stronger than your fingernail.

This means it scratches easily. It is also not the most resistant to physical impact.

Stain Resistance: 5/10

Corian is mildly porous. The material is stain & water resistant. However, prolonged exposure to dark liquids like tea can cause light brown stains to form.

Biological Resistance: 4/10

This category indicates how prone the material is to hosting bacteria and mould growth.

The same concern we had for stain resistance regarding the mildly porous surface is present here as well. It traps a certain degree of bacteria-feeding organic debris in its surface. Porous surface will shelter bacteria and mould.

Chemical Resistance: 3/10

Corian has poor resistance to chemical corrosion and will suffer anything from gentle cleansers to bleach. Solvent-based cleansers have also been known to damage the material.

Marble | Best Natural Stone for Interiors

Marble is a form of limestone that, under extreme heat and pressure, has been transformed into a mix of crystallised minerals. This gives the material its coveted and characteristic look, putting it in a class of its own for aesthetics.

However, marble is severely lacking in its practical aspects.

Physical Resistance: 4/10

Marble is often compared to granite since both are the most common whole-slab rocks used.

However, marble’s physical durability pales in comparison, with a miserly rating of 3-5 on the Mohs scale. It’s reputation as a ‘soft stone’ comes from its tendency to crack or chip under impact.

As with expensive materials, tender love and extra care is required marble to last©chipfix

Stain Resistance: 3/10

Marble is highly porous and slightly absorbent. It can be physically stained by trapping sediments from dark liquids or dirt.

A whole host of substances can also cause it to be chemically stained, even ones as mild as slightly alkaline water. Marble with a high iron content acquires rust stains in a humid environment.

Biological Resistance: 3/10

The many pores on the surface of marble trap organic debris that feed and shelter bacteria and mould.

Without constant, thorough cleaning. Marble surfaces, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, can quickly grow a layer of black scum.

Chemical Resistance: 3/10

Marble has a high content of reactive minerals, making it a nightmare to clean without specialised marble cleansers.

Your only options, besides the former, are pH-neutral gentle soaps and a soft brush or sponge.

With gentle cleaning, frequent polishing and timely maintenance, your marble will still be able to last for years to come. ©giphy

Slate | Best Natural Stone for Interiors

Slate is naturally formed from clay or volcanic ash compressed under extremely high heat and pressure.

This process forms a fine-grained and homogenous rock that has characteristic rock layers.

Physical Resistance: 4.5/10

With a rating of 5 on the Mohs scale, Slate is fairly scratch-resistant.

However, it doesn’t hold up well to impacts and may break off in flakes or chips when struck from certain angles.

Stain Resistance: 4/10

Slate has fewer pores than marble and is passably stain-resistant in day to day use. However, dark liquids like coffee or wine can still stain light coloured slate.

Biological Resistance: 4/10

Owing to its lower porosity, slate does not trap as much organic debris or bacteria as marble. However, it still requires regular cleaning to avoid a build up of scum.

Chemical Resistance: 6/10

For a natural rock, slate has a wonderfully high chemical resistance. In fact, its chemical resistance is so cherished that it is frequently used for laboratory benchtops.

Strong household cleansers should not prove an issue for the material.

Travertine | Best Natural Stone for Interiors

Travertine is an interesting form of limestone that results from accumulated minerals around hot springs.

It has been used in the construction of many famous historical sites in Rome. They include, the Colonnade of St. Peter’s Square and the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Travertine is not as common in Singapore as compared to marble or other materials©innonpender

Physical Resistance: 4/10

Much like marble, its historical significance was a matter of availability and aesthetics. Travertine has a rating of 3-4 on the Mohs scale.

It scratches and chips as easily as marble.

Stain Resistance: 3/10

Travertine is a highly porous material that absorbs liquids such as wine or coffee.

It stains readily and darkens as it traps dirt.

Biological Resistance: 3/10

Almost as porous as marble. Travertine will trap organic debris and bacteria unless it is polished and sealed.

Regular cleaning is recommended to prevent build-up of scum.

Chemical Resistance: 3/10

One of the main components of travertine is calcium carbonate. This is a rather reactive mineral that puts it in the same class as marble for chemical resistance.

Only special cleansers or gentle, pH-neutral soaps should be used on the material.

Natural rock media is most valued for its characteristic look and unique aesthetic.

Each may fare well in their own sets of category. However do note, they are all made of natural stones and age through time. Therefore constant upkeep or maintenance will still be required from time to time.

Quartz is a catch-all term for rocks and crystals composed of silicon and oxygen. It is the second most common mineral in Earth’s crust and comes in many forms such as translucent crystals and opaque rocks.

The varieties of quartz used in floor tiles are generally the harder and purer variants of the material. While some tiles are cut out of quartz, others are made of a resin binder and quartz flakes or powder.

Physical Resistance: 6/10

Quartz has a hardness of up to 6 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It is scratch resistant but is still vulnerable to chips and cracks from falling objects.

Stain Resistance: 5/10

Quartz though made with resin binders, they are still mildly porous. This means its stain resistance is moderate.

It generally defies most culprits such as tea, coffee, or wine, BUT only if cleaned up quickly. However, if coffee on a cup-bottom is left to sit on a quartz countertop, it will surely leave a stain.

Not forgetting, grouts are used to seal gaps between your tiles, you can expect to see hideous marks in between through general usage.

Water Damaged Quartz Kitchen Countertop

Previously a white quartz countertop, it will naturally amber and turn yellow over time.

Biological Resistance: 4/10

The same concern we had for stain resistance regarding the mildly porous surface is present here as well. It traps a certain degree of bacteria-feeding organic debris on floors and countertops. Not forgetting the grouts.

Porous surface & grouts will shelter bacteria and mould. To make matters worse, if poorly applied, grout leaves a recess between tiles that will trap dirt and prevent efficient cleaning.

Chemical Resistance: 4-6/10

The lower rating applies to synthesised quartz tiles. While the higher rating applies to natural quartz tiles.

Synthesised quartz is a combination of quartz powder and flakes with a resin binder. Commonly made of petroleum by-products. Such resin binders are known to react with chemicals such as alkaline cleaners and some inks, resulting in very stubborn stains.

Natural quartz is more chemically stable. Much like its common cousin, silicon dioxide, commonly known as sand.

Granite | Best Natural Stones for Homes

This classic rock is one of the toughest ones used for interior surfacing. You may think of it as a ‘rock-alloy’ of quartz and feldspar. Composition of the two most common minerals in the Earth’s crust.

Not surprisingly. It’s the most common magma-formed rock on Earth’s surface and has been used in buildings for centuries thanks to its abundance. It is commonly installed in whole slabs or tiles.

Granite is 2 steps up from quartz. It rates 8 on the Mohs scale, granite is denser and more resistant to chips and cracks from impacts. Great for floors.

Stain Resistance: 5/10

Granite enjoys a stain resistance on par with quartz. However, without a synthetic option, granite’s highly porous surface is vulnerable to stains from oils and viscous liquids like inks.

While water may leave a dark stain for a while, evaporation will eventually clear it. Not oils and inks, however.

Biological Resistance: 3/10

The many pores on the surface of granite mean it will trap organic debris that feeds bacteria, as well as sheltering bacteria and mould.

Without regular and thorough cleaning, granite surfaces, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. It can quickly allow for a disgusting layer of scum or discolour from bacteria growth.

Chemical Resistance: 3/10

Granite has a high content of reactive minerals, making it a nightmare to clean without specialised cleansers. Your only options, besides the former, are pH-neutral gentle soaps and a soft brush or sponge.

Ceramic and porcelain are two types of man-made tiles using natural rock media. A wet mix of clay, feldspar, silica sand and other raw materials are shaped into tiles and fired in a kiln. Producing strong and hard tiles.

Porcelain is an upgrade on ceramic. The material is fired at a higher temperature for a longer duration, producing a denser and less porous tile. As expected, porcelain is usually a fair bit more expensive.

Ceramic tiles rank a low 4 with their middling scratch and impact resistance making them prone to scratches and chips.

Denser porcelain performs better at a 6, but can still be chipped or cracked by dropping heavy objects. Ceramic typically ranks up to 5 on the Mohs scale, while porcelain can go as high as 7.

Stain Resistance: 2-4/10

Ceramic and porcelain have a few strengths, but stain resistance is not one of them. To seal off pores on tiles, a ceramic glaze is often used on tiles.

However, the glaze applied varies widely in composition across different manufacturers. While some see more success than others in resisting stains, others are discoloured by simple substances like lemon juice or animal urine.

If you decline the option of a glaze, the raw tile itself still stains easily thanks to its porous nature. Raw porcelain (3/10) typically fares much better than raw ceramic (1/10).

Biological Resistance: 5.5/10

Porcelain and glazed ceramic (5.5/10) are non-porous and do not trap debris or bacteria, but suffer the same drawback as all tiles – grout.

In other news, raw ceramic (3) is terrible, again. Its many tiny pores trap debris, grow bacteria and mould, and make cleaning difficult.

Chemical Resistance: 3-6/10

Glazes (3/10) may stain easily and badly thanks to their poor chemical resistance. While raw ceramic and porcelain (6/10) may fare better.

This is a gamble you may wish to reconsider, since it depends heavily on the tile’s specific composition. A higher percentage of reactive material like chalk will certainly reduce the tile’s chemical resistance.

Granite is lacking in this area as well. While it is among the harder and tougher stones, granite still chips and cracks when subjected to impact from heavy or sharp objects.

Worse still, it is difficult to patch granite back to its original look, especially if the crack is deep. It can also be permanently stained by acidic liquids like hot tomato soup or dark liquids like wine and sauces.

It is entirely fine to place hot pans directly on surface. However, we would still strongly recommend heat-resistant cork pads for when you need to rest hot cookware.
